SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State rowing team is set to compete in the 46th annual San Diego Crew Classic this weekend at Crown Point Shores on Mission Bay. The Aztecs will enter five total crews over the course of events on Saturday and Sunday, April 6-7.
The Scarlet and Black begin races with Saturday's women's collegiate varsity Jessop Whittier Cup, an invitation-only event for collegiate varsity eight crews. The Aztecs are set to compete in the second heat at 9:12 a.m., alongside V8 boats from Washington, Stanford, UCLA, Gonzaga and Tennessee. The top three finishers in heat two, as well as the top three boats from heat one, will advance to Sunday's grand final, scheduled for 10:32 a.m., while fourth through sixth-place finishers from each heat will compete in the petite final at 10:24 a.m. on Sunday.
At 10 a.m., the second varsity eight crew is slated to race in heat three for the women's collegiate 2V Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy. The Aztecs will compete in lane four and will be going up against Stanford, Texas, Oklahoma, Fordham and UC San Diego. For all three heats of the 2V event, the top two finishers will advance to Sunday's grand final at 9:44 a.m., while boats finishing third and fourth advance to Sunday's 9:36 a.m. petite final, and fifth and sixth-place crews move on to compete in final three on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
The Aztecs will enter two varsity four boats into this weekend's events, the first of which will compete in Saturday's women's collegiate varsity 4+ Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup. SDSU is set to compete in heat three with Stanford, Texas, Tennessee, Saint Mary's and Santa Clara at 10:24 a.m. Similar to the 2V8, the top two boats in each heat will advance to the grand final at 8:32 a.m. on Sunday, the third and fourth-place finishers continue on to the petite final at 8:24 a.m. on Sunday, and the fifth and sixth place crews advance to final three, scheduled for Saturday afternoon at 3:38 p.m.
San Diego State will also compete in the women's open eight event, the Carley Copley Cup, on Saturday and are slated to race in heat one at 12:08 p.m. against crews from Washington, Stanford and Potomac BC. All competitors from the two open eight heats will advance to the grand final, which is set for Sunday afternoon at 2:08 p.m.
The second of the Aztec varsity four crews will compete in the women's collegiate 4+ B final only event on Sunday at 11:48 a.m. SDSU will race in lane five and will take on boats from Washington State, UCLA, Oklahoma, Tennessee, USD and UC Santa Barbara.
Tickets for the Crew Classic are available for purchase in person on Saturday and Sunday, as well as online in advance of the races at crewclassic.org. Regular adult admission is $15 per day, while students and members of the military will receive free admission with a valid student/military ID. Additional VIP tent tickets are also available on the crew classic website at varied costs.
