MW Network | Live Audio | Game Notes
- The Aztecs hit the road for their final two games of the regular season. They play at Boise State Tuesday evening at 6:00 p.m. PT and then take on the Nevada Wolf Pack in Reno, Nev. Friday at 6:30 p.m. PT.
- Both games will be streamed live on the Mountain West Network. Additionally there will be live audio on GoAztecs.com with Chris Ello calling the action courtside.
- Behind a season-high 34 fourth quarter points, the Aztecs knocked off San José State 85-78 this past Saturday afternoon. The Aztecs led for the majority of the game and then put the Spartans away by shooting 61 percent in the final quarter. San Diego State honored their six seniors before the game: Allison Brown, McKynzie Fort, Geena Gomez, Cheyenne Greenhouse, Khalia Lark and Lexy Thorderson.
- The Aztecs ball movement was the key to their offensive explosion. They dished out a season-high 29 assists on 35 field goals, led by freshman Naje Murray's career-best eight dimes. San Diego State had nine players score and was led by Geena Gomez's career-high 22 points; topping her previous best of 21, which was set against the Spartans earlier this season. Murray scored 15, senior McKynzie Fort had a double-double with 12 points and 16 rebounds. Cheyenne Greenhouse (10) and Arantxa Gomez Ferrer (11) also had double-digit points. Gomez Ferrer's 11 points were a career-high and she also grabbed six rebounds.
- McKynzie Fort now has 1,651 career points, good for third on the Aztecs' all-time scoring list. Next up is Falisha Wright (1992-95) with 1,733 career points.
- Entering the week, Fort occupies the sixth spot in the Mountain West with an average of 16.1 points per game. She is also third in minutes (34.8/gm), fourth in field-goal percentage amongst qualified players (.457) and ninth in assists (3.4/gm). In addition, senior Geena Gomez (11.0 ppg) is eighth in assists (3.8/gm) and eighth in three-point accuracy (.383).
- The Aztecs set a program record for season attendance. The Aztecs had 22,069 fans over their 16 games for an average of 1,379. This breaks the total and average attendance records set in 2007-08, when the Aztecs drew 14,730 fans for an average of 1,133 per game.
- Collectively, the Aztecs are slotted sixth in the MW this week in three-point field goal percentage (33.9) and in three-pointers made (6.8/gm). They also rank fifth in rebounding margin (-0.3) and in rebounds per game (37.3).
- As a team, SDSU is averaging 64.9 points per game while yielding 68.4 on the defensive side of the ball. In addition, the Aztecs are shooting 39.3 percent from the floor and 33.9 percent from three-point territory.
- The Aztecs will begin the Mountain West Tournament Monday March 5 in Las Vegas. Opponent and game time are still to be determined.
All-Time Series vs. Boise State
- Tuesday's game will be the 14th meeting between the two schools.
- The Broncos have won four of the last five meetings.
- The Aztecs are 2-3 all-time when playing at Boise.
- The Broncos beat the Aztecs 86-70 January 13 in San Diego despite holding a 43-36 lead at half time. Geena Gomez (14 points) was one of four Aztecs to score in double-digits.
- These two teams only played once before Boise State joined the Mountain West, a 54-51 Aztecs' win December 20, 2005 at SDSU.
Scouting the Broncos
- Boise State is 18-9 overall and 12-4 in conference play, good for third place.
- They have won five games in a row and seven of their last eight.
- The Broncos are 10-5 at home this season.
- Riley Lupfer is second in the MW in scoring (16.8/gm) and third in field goal percentage (.480). She leads the conference in three-pointers made (3.8/gm) and in three-point percentage (.464).
- Marta Hermida is second in the conference with 5.0 assists per game.
- A'Shanti Coleman is second in the conference with 1.1 blocks per game.
- Boise State is second in the MW in scoring (69.9/gm), three-point percentage (.362), assists (15.4/gm) and blocks (3.8/gm).
- They are eighth in the MW in turnover margin (-1.1) and tenth in steals (5.8/gm).
- Head coach Gordy Presnell is in his 13th season at BSU and has the most wins in program history. He came to Boise after 18 successful years at Seattle Pacific.
Notes with a 'W'
An Aztec victory over Boise State on Tuesday will mean:
- SDSU will improve to 12-16 overall and 6-11 in the Mountain West.
- They will win two games in a season against BSU for the first time since 2013.
- They will improve to 3-7 on the road.
- The Aztecs will eclipse their win total from last season.
- SDSU will improve to 3-3 all-time at Boise.
- The Aztecs will win two MW games in a row for the first time this season.
- The Aztecs will get their second win over a top three MW team (Wyoming, 68-62, 12-28-17)
Of Note
- San Diego State is 8-5 this season when holding the opposition to under 40 percent shooting from the field.
- The Aztecs are 8-2 when scoring 70 points or more and 3-14 when they don't.
- In addition, the Aztecs are 7-4 on the year when out-rebounding their foes.
- In 11wins this season, SDSU is averaging 76.5 points per game and is shooting 44.5 percent from the floor, including a 40.5 percent pace on three-pointers.
- In 16 defeats, however, the Aztecs are averaging just 57.0 points per contest, connecting on 35.4 percent of their field-goal attempts, including a 28.7 clip on treys.
- Similarly, the Aztecs have fared better statistically in home games compared to road contests. In 16 home games, SDSU is averaging 68.2 points while draining 40.9 percent of its field-goal attempts and 35.5 percent of its tries from long-range. However, in nine road games, the Scarlet and Black is averaging 59.9 points while shooting 38.4 percent from the floor, including a 31.6 percent pace from outside the arc.
