SAN DIEGO -
No. 11/10 San Diego State-Cal Poly Game Notes | SDSU Broadcast Flip
San Diego State (10-0), ranked 11th in the Associated Press Top-25 Poll and 10th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Top 25, continues its three-game homestand Monday night when Cal Poly (3-5) visits Viejas Arena for the first time since 2003.
The non-conference game between the old California Collegiate Athletic Association foes is set for 7 p.m. PT at SDSU's on-campus arena. There is no television for the game, but the game can be heard on radio in Southern California on AM 600 KOGO with Ted Leitner calling the action.
SDSU is 10-0 for the first time in school history and, as of early Sunday evening, was one of just 14 Division I teams who remain undefeated. The Aztecs moved to 10-0 on Saturday after defeating their third West Coast Conference squad this season in cross-town foe San Diego. The Toreros enjoyed a 25-18 lead with 5:39 left in the first half until the Aztecs went on a 16-3 run to end the half. San Diego State then continued what it started at the beginning of the second period as it outscored USD 14-2 in the first 6:21 to cap a 30-5 run to put the game away for all intents and purposes. Senior forward Malcolm Thomas scored a season-high 20 points, which included a career-high eight free throws. Classmate D.J. Gay continued to show off his shooting touch for a second straight game, connecting on 6-of-8 from the field and 4-of-5 from beyond the arc, en route to 16 points. In his last two games, Gay is 8-for-11 from three-point distance (72.7 percent) and 11 for his last 17 from the field (64.7 percent). Sophomore Kawhi Leonard, meanwhile, registered his seventh double-double of 2010-11 with 13 points and a season-high-matching 13 rebounds.
The Aztecs and Mustangs renew a series that has been dormant since 2003. The schools have met just twice in the Division I era, which dates back to the 1970-71 campaign, with San Diego State claiming victories in 2002 in San Luis Obispo and in 2003 at what was then known as Cox Arena. Prior to the aforementioned meetings, the programs met on a regular basis from 1947-55 and 1957-1968 as members of the California Collegiate Athletic Association with SDSU winning 28 of the 43 match-ups. In 1956 and 1969, San Diego State was an independent and posted a 4-1 record against Cal Poly. The Scarlet and Black is looking to win its sixth straight in the series and its 11th in a row within San Diego County lines.
The Mustangs, like the Aztecs, played on Saturday night and were on the wrong end of a 72-61 score at UCLA. Cal Poly chopped a 17-point second-half deficit to seven with 6:45 remaining in regulation, but the Bruins kept the Mustangs off the scoreboard for the ensuing six minutes en route to the win. David Hanson, who leads the team in scoring with a 15.8 average, led Cal Poly with 18 points while playing the entire 40 minutes.
