AZTEC STORY LINES
- San Diego State will continue its season-opening four-game road trip on Friday when it takes on Central Florida at 7 p.m. ET. Following their clash with the Knights, the Aztecs will travel to Gainesville to play their second top-10 opponent of the season in No. 9 Florida on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. ET.
- SDSU is coming off a 1-1 season-opening trip to Northern California. The Aztecs allowed a goal to ninth-ranked Santa Clara in the 22nd minute, outplayed the Broncos in the second half, so much so, that SCU was forced to change their defensive formation to a 4-5-1, but could not find the back of the net in losing 1-0. Two days later at Sacramento State, San Diego State was down 1-0 not even two minutes into the game, but rallied for the 2-1 victory after Michaela DeJesus and Sarah Halverson tallied single goals.
- Halverson's game-winner at Sacramento State was the sophomore's third of her young career. Three of her four career goals have given SDSU the victory. Her three game-winners are the most of any Aztec on the active roster. Only senior Cat Walker, who suffered an ACL injury prior to the start of the season, has more with eight. Minus Walker, the rest of the roster has only two game-winning goals to its credit. DeJesus posted the winner at Air Force last year, while Tiffany Hurst, who is redshirting this season, notched her own vs. Seattle in 2009.
- SDSU will visit Orlando and the UCF Soccer Complex winners of eight straight against unranked foes dating back to last year. In fact, San Diego State is unbeaten in 15 consecutive games and has won 12 of its last 15 vs. non-ranked opponents. In road/neutral outings vs. unranked teams, SDSU is unbeaten in eight straight and in nine of its last 11.
- Despite the loss at No. 9 Santa Clara, San Diego State has been a tough out on the road during the regular season dating back to 2009. The Aztecs have won five of their last six true road games and are unbeaten in eight of their last 10 with losses coming to the Broncos and Arizona State in overtime, 2-1, back on Sept. 11, 2009.
- SDSU comes into the Central Florida game unbeaten in 17 of its last 19 games and winners of nine of its last 11 dating back to 2009. Prior to the Santa Clara loss, the other defeat came in the second round of the NCAA Tournament against No. 3 UCLA.
- San Diego State is unbeaten in six of its last seven regular-season matches against non-conference foes and is unbeaten in five of its last six regular-season road contests.
- San Diego State is meeting Central Florida for the first time since 2003 and is 1-1 all-time vs. the Knights. SDSU won the first meeting in San Diego, 4-1, in 1997, but lost the most recent match-up, 1-0, in 2003 in Lawrence, Kan.
- The Aztecs and Gators will meet for the first time on Sunday. In fact, San Diego State has met a Southeastern Conference school just once before, losing to South Carolina at SDSU Sports Deck, 2-1, in 2001.
- In the first NSCAA Pacific Region Rankings released Aug. 24, SDSU finds itself ranked No. 10.
- When the Mountain West unveiled its preseason coaches' poll earlier this month, San Diego State found itself in a second-place tie with Utah. Both schools earned a first-place vote and were selected to finish behind BYU.
OPPOSITION NOTEBOOK
Central Florida
Central Florida is 0-1 on the year after falling to San Diego State's Sunday opponent, Florida, 2-0, at UCF Soccer Complex on Sunday ... The Knights were ranked No. 25 in the NSCAA Preseason Top 25, but have since fallen out of the poll and are receiving votes in the Aug. 24 poll ... UCF and then-No. 11 Florida were playing to a scoreless tie until Tahnai Annis scored in the 48th minute after a turnover in the box ... A little more than four minutes later, Annis beat UCF keeper Aline Reis once again to provide the Gators with the winning margin ... Reis was named Conference USA's preseason defender of the year and was joined by Bianca Jowiak on the C-USA preseason team ... Last season, UCF won the Conference USA crown en route to its 14th trip to the NCAA Tournament where it was a No. 3 national seed.
#9 Florida
Florida, the preseason choice to win the Southeastern Conference, is 2-0 after a double-overtime 2-1 win over Miami and a 2-0 victory at Central Florida ... The Gators started the year ranked No. 11 in the NSCAA preseason poll and now find themselves at No. 9 ... Tahnai Annis leads the team with two goals and four points and shares the point lead with McKenzie Barney, who has tallied one goal and two assists in the early going ... Katie Fraine is 2-0 and has a goals-against average of 0.46 while in net ... In 2009, the Gators finished the season with a record of 16-6-2 (8-1-2 SEC) and were ousted in the second round of the NCAA Tournament by Oregon State, a team SDSU tied at home in October.
