SAN DIEGO -
San Diego State-Point Loma Nazarene Postgame Quotes in PDF Format
San Diego State Head Coach Steve Fisher
Opening Statement:
"I think the best thing to happen to us going into this season is that they moved the three-point line back a foot. We've beome a prolific three-point shooting team now as the 12-for-22 would attest. This was a nice opening event for our kids with people to come in and watch, and we'll have a lot of teaching to do from the tape also. We played hard, but we did not do a very good job defending ball screens, so we have to find out why. (Curtis) Carlson, as one of our players said, is going to want our meal money the way he played. But I like our team and I think for opening night it was pretty good for us."
On the play of Kyle Spain:
"Kyle has practiced really well for us. He has been by far our best catch-and-shoot player. When he plays under control, which he did most of hte time, he's a very good player. When he gets an open shot you expect it to go in. He's very confident in his offensive game, so it's nice to have him back."
On D.J. Gay and Richie Williams being on the floor at the same time:
"That's our best lineup right now and late last season we had them out together quite a bit. What we tried to do in the second half was let Richie run the wing and let D.J. be the point, as opposed to Richie always being the point. I think that was helpful for both. It allowed Richie to not have to be quite so worn down by having the ball all the time and we had D.J. guard their point guards. I think that was good for both of them, but right now they'll be on the floor quite a bit together."
Point Loma Nazarene Head Coach Ethan Hamilton
On playing the Aztecs:
"I thought it was a great opportunity; we're always very appreciative that Steve (Fisher) allows us to come over here. It's a tune-up for us and a tune up for (SDSU). I think we played hard and battled through some adversity. We went through a rough stretch, when San Diego State was on a 24-3 run at the end of the first half, I think that really made the difference."
the difficulty the Sea Lions faced against the Aztecs:
"I was incredibly impressed with was how well they shot the three. For (the Aztecs) to go 12-for-22 from the three-point range...we really struggled against their three-point shooting. Richie (Williams) is an improved shooter; Kyle (Spain) can stroke it; and D.J. (Gay)...those three guys with their athletic play and some of their other strengths, I think that gives them great flexibility. I think they'll have a great year with five or six guys with double figures each game."
