MARINA DEL REY, Calif. - The San Diego State rowing team won all five events it entered at the Parker Cup Regatta at La Ballona Creek in Marina Del Rey, Calif., on Saturday. The Aztecs, competing in their first race of the season, received wins from the Varsity Eight, Varsity Four, and Junior Varsity Eight boats, as well as the Novice Four and Novice Eight boats.
"Overall I'm very pleased with our performance today," head coach Jennifer Zebroski said. "Our goal was to be consistent in all our races today and I thought we did a good job in that respect. It was a great day for us."
The Varsity Eight boat pulled away in the last 800 meters to defeat Loyola Marymount in the closest race of the day for the Aztecs. SDSU finished first in 7:08.3, just five seconds ahead of LMU (7:13.5). UC Irvine was a distant third in 7:36.2
"Our stroke rating wasn't as high as LMU's coming into (the race)," Zebroski said. "We knew the pace was going to be faster, but we were able to pull it out. We will only get better once our stroke rating and speed improves."
The Varsity Four boat (8:01.7) defeated Loyola Marymount (8:17.1) and was just as successful in the Junior Varsity Eight (7:24.7 to LMU's 7:53.1).
In novice action, SDSU's Novice Eight raced to a time of 7:25.4, well ahead of UC Irvine (7:50.2) and Loyola Marymount (8:12.3). The Novice Four (8:26.5) also defeated second-place UC Irvine (8:49.8).
"It was a great way to start the season for us and I'm excited to see what we can do in the coming weeks," Zebroski said. "We were very motivated to do well and I`m very pleased with the result."
The Aztecs will be back in the water this weekend when they take on UC Davis (March 10) and Sacramento State (March 11).
