A total of 45 San Diego State student-athletes from 10 different spring sports have been named to the Mountain West Conference all-academic team for the 2005 spring semester. This year's selections continued the upward trend of Aztec honorees from 32 in 2003, to 43 during the same period last year.
To be considered for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at SDSU, while earning a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better and be a starter or significant contributor on their respective team.
The Aztec women's track and field squad had the largest group of honorees with 13 selections overall, highlighted by senior distance runner Marie Nilsson (Kil, Sweden). Nilsson, a four-time recipient of the Malik Award given to the SDSU student-athlete with the highest GPA, finished her undergraduate studies with a cumulative 3.95 GPA in international security and conflict resolution.
Other Aztec student-athletes honored include four-time all-MWC doubles selection Indra Erichsen (Husum, Germany), three-time all-conference softball pitcher Celena Velasquez (Tucson, Ariz.), 2005 NCAA tennis tournament participant Benedikt Stronk (Berlin, Germany) and women's golf standout Jamie Oliver (Los Alamitos, Calif.).
