San Diego State Hires New Assistant Coach

Aug. 8, 2002

SAN DIEGO - Chuck Clegg, San Diego State's women's soccer head coach, has announced the hiring of Angela Morrison as the program's new assistant coach.

Clegg said he thinks Morrison's extensive playing and coaching experience will make a positive impact on the team, especially in the area of recruiting.

"Being a head coach, even at a Division II level, helps in the decision making process. She knows what is necessary for the overall good of the program," Clegg said.

Morrison comes to SDSU from the University of North Dakota, where she served as head coach of the Fighting Sioux throughout the 2001 season. During her tenure, the Sioux posted a 9-6-1 record. Prior to taking over the UND program, Morrison spent two years as the graduate assistant coach at North Dakota.

"It's a tremendous opportunity to coach at San Diego State," Morrison said. "As I get to know the players, it's a great group and I'm looking forward to assisting Coach Clegg in taking the program to the next level."

The summers of 1998 and 1999 found Morrison in Halifax, Nova Scotia, as the technical director for the Halifax City Wanderers soccer club. The club encompassed nearly 1,500 members. During the soccer seasons of 1998 and 1999, Morrison was an associate head coach at the University of Maine at Presque Isle.

In addition to her responsibilities with the Wanderers club, Morrison has been an instructor for the North Dakota Olympic Development Program and implemented a soccer academy for players aged 7-18 in North Dakota. Morrison also coached a U-17 Girls Division I soccer program and trained the goalkeepers for the University of Maine men's soccer team from 1999-2000.

As a player, Morrison played professionally for the Tasaki Perule Football Club of Kobe-City, Japan. While in Japan, she competed against such soccer notables as U.S. National Team members Tiffeny Milbrett and Shannon MacMillan as well as Norwegian athletes Linda Medalin and Hege Riise.

At the collegiate level, Morrison was a starter for the Acadia University Axewomen for five years. She was an all-conference selection and goalkeeper for the 1996-97 team that set a national Division I record for posting a no-goals-against average the entire season, finishing 14-0-3.

Morrison, who graduated from Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, with a bachelor's degree in physical education, has continued her pursuit of higher education. She also earned a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Maine and is currently completing a Masters of Science in Education Leadership through the University North Dakota.
